The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission will hear applicaitons from Bruce Power concerning the restart of Bruce Nuclear Generating Station A on December 12, 2002.  Bruce Power wants permission to load fuel into Bruce A reactors 3 and 4 even before the license to restart  is granted.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announces two separate
public hearings concerning the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station A
(NGS A) located in Tiverton, Ontario.

  The first hearing is a one-day public hearing on December 12, 2002
to consider the Environmental Assessment Screening Report for the
return to service of Units 3 and 4 of the Bruce NGS A prepared
pursuant to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. At this
hearing, the Commission will also consider whether to refer to a
Designated Officer (senior CNSC staff) an application by Bruce Power
Inc. dated July 19, 2002 to authorize an amendment to the Nuclear
Power Reactor Operating Licence to permit refuelling of Bruce NGS A
Units 3 and 4 prior to the decision by the Commission on the restart
of these two units. A reference of this application to a Designated
Officer would be considered only if the Commission approves the
Environmental Assessment Screening Report following the hearing. The
second hearing is a two-day public hearing on January 16 and February
26, 2003 on amendments to the current operating licence of Bruce
Power Inc. which would authorize restart of Units 3 and 4. This
hearing will proceed only if the Commission approves the
Environmental Assessment Screening Report following the December 12,
2002 hearing.

The one-day public hearing will be held on: One-Day Hearing: December
12, 2002 Intervention deadline: November 27, 2002

Commission documents will be available on November 1, 2002 The
two-day public hearing to consider an amendment of the operating
licence to authorize the restart of Bruce A Units 3 and 4 will be
held on: Hearing Day One: January 16, 2003

Hearing Day Two: February 26, 2003 Intervention deadline: February
17, 2003 Commission documents will be available December 16, 2002 Š2/
-2- The public is invited to intervene either by oral presentation or
written submission at both hearings. For the two-day hearing, the
public is invited to participate on Day Two.

  All hearings will be held in the CNSC Public Hearing Room, 14th
floor, 280 Slater Street, Ottawa, Ontario. Public hearings begin at
8:30 a.m. and follow the order listed in the agenda published prior
to the hearing dates. Requests to intervene and text of oral
presentations or written submissions must be filed with the Secretary
of the Commission by the above-mentioned intervention deadlines.
